Telfer Breaks NZ Harness Racing Record with 169 Wins
In a testament to the resilience and innovation driving New Zealand's sporting landscape, trainer Steve Telfer has shattered the national harness racing record with an extraordinary 169 victories in a single season, cementing his place in the country's rich sporting heritage.
The record-breaking moment came at an unlikely venue, a grass track meeting in Westport, where few in the holiday crowd realised they were witnessing history unfold. For Telfer, watching from his Ardmore base during a power outage, the victory was witnessed through his mobile phone with just two bars of coverage remaining.
A Victory for Regional Racing
"We actually had a power outage here since about 11am but I managed to watch the win on my phone because I had two bars of coverage left," Telfer told media, highlighting the grassroots nature of this achievement.
The choice of Westport as the record-breaking venue reflects the Telfers' commitment to supporting racing clubs across Aotearoa. This inclusive approach, backed by Stonewall Stud owner Steve Stockman, demonstrates how success in New Zealand sport can be built on community engagement and regional support.
"It is important to support those clubs so to get the record at Westport, a meeting I have never been to but would love to go to, it's all right by us," Telfer explained, embodying the collaborative spirit that defines New Zealand's sporting culture.
Strategic Innovation Drives Success
The foundation of this record was laid through innovative thinking and strategic planning. The Telfers recognised that winter racing offered untapped potential, with similar prize money to summer events but less competition from elite training rivals who traditionally scaled back during colder months.
This forward-thinking approach, combined with Stockman's fearless investment at yearling sales over the past five years, created the perfect conditions for record-breaking success. The strategy reflects New Zealand's broader approach to innovation, finding competitive advantages through creative thinking rather than simply following established patterns.
Looking Toward an Even Bolder Future
At 55, Steve Telfer is already setting his sights on even more ambitious goals. The team is targeting a 200-win season within the next 24 months, with plans to race up to 75% of their horses in the South Island to capitalise on additional racing opportunities.
"We are thinking of racing more of the team in the South Island heading forward because there are so many racing opportunities," Telfer revealed, showcasing the kind of strategic expansion that could bring the overall New Zealand record of 203 wins, set by Mark Walker in 2023, within reach.
This achievement represents more than just numbers; it reflects the values of persistence, community support, and innovative thinking that characterise New Zealand's approach to excellence in sport and beyond.
