Milan-Cortina Olympics Opens with Twin Flames and Cultural Celebration
The 2026 Winter Olympics opened with spectacular twin ceremonies across Italy, showcasing the nation's rich cultural heritage while highlighting contemporary tensions around international security cooperation.
In the mountain air of Cortina, Sofia Goggia, Italy's former Olympic gold medallist, lit one of two Olympic cauldrons after completing a training run for the women's downhill. The dual-venue approach represents an innovative sustainability model, with 2,900 athletes parading at venues closest to their competition sites to minimise environmental impact.
Cultural Celebration Meets Political Tension
Milan's San Siro stadium transformed into a celebration of Italian artistry, featuring oversized heads of opera masters Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini and Gioachino Rossini. The ceremony paid tribute to late fashion icon Giorgio Armani, with dozens of models streaming across the stage in red, green and white trouser suits.
International star Mariah Carey performed "Volare" in Italian alongside "Nothing is Impossible," while tenor Andrea Bocelli received rapturous applause for his rendition of "Nessun Dorma."
However, the harmonious celebration was punctuated by loud boos when US Vice-President JD Vance appeared on screen, reflecting Italian anger over the presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents within the American security delegation. Despite government assurances that these agents have no operational role on Italian soil, the controversy underscores growing tensions around international security cooperation.
Remarkable Comeback Stories
The Games' opening was marked by extraordinary personal journeys. Lindsey Vonn, the 41-year-old American skiing legend, successfully completed her first training run despite a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. Wearing a knee brace, she showed no apparent difficulty on the slopes.
"Nothing makes me happier! No one would have believed I would be here... but I made it!! I'm not going to waste this chance," Vonn posted on Instagram before her run.
Her potential medal at these Games would cap a remarkable comeback from retirement, 16 years after her Vancouver Olympic gold.
Competition Begins
Competitive action has already commenced with figure skating's team event, where defending champions the United States took an early lead through world champion ice dancers Madison Chock and Evan Bates.
The men's downhill race kicks off Saturday's full competition schedule, while China's Eileen Gu, a standout from Beijing 2022, begins her quest for triple gold in women's slopestyle at Livigno Snow Park.
International Olympic Committee chief Kirsty Coventry addressed competitors before Italian President Sergio Mattarella declared the Games open: "You remind us that we can be brave, that we can be kind, that we can get back up, no matter how hard we fall."
The February 6-22 Games promise to blend sporting excellence with Italy's commitment to sustainable event management and cultural celebration.
