In a significant leadership transition for New Zealand's local governance, Barbara McKerrow, the former Wellington City Council chief executive, has been appointed as interim chief executive of Whanganui District Council. McKerrow, whose extensive experience in regional leadership and governance spans over 25 years, will assume her role in October.

Strategic Transition Period

The appointment comes as current chief executive David Langford prepares to depart for a senior position with Nottinghamshire County Council in the UK. Mayor Andrew Tripe emphasized the strategic nature of this interim appointment, particularly given the upcoming local government elections in October.

"We quickly identified that we would need someone in an interim role to keep momentum going through and beyond the elections and across the council's many projects, initiatives and deliverables," stated Mayor Tripe.

Distinguished Leadership Background

McKerrow's impressive career includes five years at the helm of Wellington City Council, where she oversaw significant metropolitan developments, and nine years leading New Plymouth District Council. Her exceptional service was recognized with a Distinguished Management Award from Taituarā in 2023.

Regional Development Focus

Speaking about her new role, McKerrow expressed enthusiasm for Whanganui's potential, highlighting the district's cultural wealth and economic progress. Her appointment comes at a time when regional cooperation and development are increasingly crucial for New Zealand's communities.

Looking Forward

The council will begin its search for a permanent chief executive soon, with the final appointment to be made after the new council's induction following October's elections. Langford's departure marks the end of a productive three-and-a-half-year tenure, during which he drove significant infrastructure and strategic improvements for the district.
