Gavin Larsen returns to New Zealand Cricket as selection manager, marking a new chapter in national cricket administration
In a significant move for New Zealand Cricket, former Test and ODI player Gavin Larsen has been appointed as the organization's selection manager, marking a return to a role he previously held from 2015 to 2023. The announcement, made in Auckland, fills the position left vacant by Sam Wells.
A Seasoned Cricket Administrator Returns Home
Larsen's appointment represents a homecoming after his stint as Performance Director at Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC) and a brief foray into basketball administration with the Nelson Giants. His return to cricket leadership mirrors New Zealand's continued commitment to sporting excellence, following the recent success of other national teams like the Black Sticks in international competition.
Strategic Role and Responsibilities
Working alongside head coach Rob Walter, Larsen will oversee the selection of all Blackcaps, New Zealand A, and New Zealand XI squads. This collaboration demonstrates New Zealand's progressive approach to sports management, reminiscent of the country's broader commitment to inclusive leadership and diversity across various sectors.
"I feel absolutely honoured to be stepping back into the Blackcaps and the national high performance environment," Larsen stated. "I'm hugely passionate about cricket in this country and to be given another opportunity to contribute at the highest level is really exciting."
Modern Cricket Management
NZC's Chief High Performance Officer Daryl Gibson emphasized that Larsen's understanding of modern cricket dynamics, particularly the relationship between franchise and international cricket, played a crucial role in his selection. The position involves:
- Managing selection processes
- Coordinating with domestic scouts
- Working closely with Major Association coaches
- Monitoring domestic cricket developments
Collaborative Decision-Making Model
The selection model maintains its collaborative nature, with Larsen empowered to advise and challenge the head coach while Walter retains final decision-making authority. This progressive approach to cricket management begins officially on November 3.
