Finland's Far-Right Coalition Tests Democracy with Racist Gestures
A troubling display of solidarity with racist imagery has exposed deep fractures within Finland's governing coalition, as three politicians from the far-right Finns Party mimicked offensive anti-Asian gestures in support of Miss Finland Sarah Dzafce.
The controversy erupted after Dzafce faced criticism for making a slanted-eye gesture, prompting MPs Juho Eerola, Kaisa Garedew, and MEP Sebastian Tynkkynen to replicate the same offensive action in a misguided show of support.
Coalition Partners Condemn 'Disgraceful' Actions
The incident has created unprecedented tension within Finland's four-party conservative coalition government. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, leader of the centre-right National Coalition Party, described the gestures as "thoughtless and stupid" and damaging to Finland's international reputation.
"It went into childishness," Orpo stated, emphasising his administration's supposed zero tolerance policy against racism and extremism. "This is not the example parliamentarians should be setting."
Coalition partners issued a joint statement condemning the photos as "disgraceful", marking a significant rift in the governing alliance.
Finns Party Leadership Refuses to Condemn
Notably absent from the criticism was Riikka Purra, the Finns Party leader and finance minister, who refused to condemn the images. Instead, she claimed they highlighted the "absurdity" of the debate and demonstrated support for Dzafce.
Eerola, who chairs the Finnish parliament's legal affairs committee, made the offensive gesture his Facebook profile picture with the caption "Je suis Sarah". He later claimed the image was meant to be "fun" and to criticise the Miss Finland organisation, though he eventually apologised for the "misunderstanding and upset it had caused".
Pattern of Extremist Behaviour
This incident represents the latest in a series of controversies plaguing the Finns Party, which has faced persistent accusations of links to white supremacist ideology. The party's track record includes:
- Economy minister Vilhelm Junnila's resignation in 2023 over repeated Nazi references
- Purra's own racist blog posts from 2008
- Replacement minister Wille Rydman's use of racial slurs in private messages
International Implications
The scandal has prompted calls to boycott Finnair, Finland's national carrier that operates extensive routes to Asia. The airline was forced to distance itself from the politicians, stating they do not represent its values.
This controversy serves as a crucial test for a new accountability system introduced specifically to address the Finns Party's repeated breaches of equality commitments. Coalition party leaders have warned that each party's credibility depends on how it holds members accountable.
Democratic Values Under Pressure
The incident reflects broader challenges facing European democracies as far-right parties gain political influence while maintaining connections to extremist ideologies. Finland's experience offers a stark warning about the normalisation of racist behaviour within mainstream political coalitions.
As Finland approaches its next general election in 2027, this controversy will likely serve as a defining moment for the country's commitment to inclusive democratic values and international respect.
