In a significant leadership transition, Barbara McKerrow, former Wellington City Council chief executive, has been appointed as interim CEO of Whanganui District Council, bringing her extensive public service experience to the role.

Strategic Transition Leadership

McKerrow, who will assume the position in October following David Langford's departure, brings over 25 years of senior executive experience to Whanganui. Her appointment comes at a crucial time as regional leadership and development remain key priorities for New Zealand's local governments.

"This district is rich with cultural taonga, innovative thinking and abundant creativity. Your economic development metrics are looking positive, indicating growth is heading in the right direction," McKerrow stated, highlighting her commitment to the region's development.

Distinguished Track Record

McKerrow's impressive career includes five years at the helm of Wellington's city administration and nine years leading New Plymouth District Council. Her contributions to local government were recognized with a 2023 Distinguished Management Award from Taituarā, the national professional body for local government professionals.

Leadership Transition Period

Mayor Andrew Tripe emphasized that a permanent appointment would be deferred until after the October local government elections, ensuring proper democratic process and continuity. The council has initiated plans for a comprehensive recruitment process to find a permanent chief executive.

Key Priorities for Interim Leadership

  • Maintaining momentum on existing council projects
  • Supporting transition through local government elections
  • Strengthening community partnerships
  • Advancing economic development initiatives

The outgoing CEO, David Langford, will take up a senior position with Nottinghamshire County Council in the UK, where he will lead transportation and waste management initiatives for a population of 1.2 million residents.
