Unexpected Obstacle for New All Blacks Selection
In an amusing twist to New Zealand's Rugby Championship preparation, rookie utility back Leroy Carter faced an unexpected challenge when his family dog chewed up his passport just days before the team's departure for Argentina.
Carter, one of four uncapped players selected by coach Scott Robertson for the upcoming Championship matches, discovered the destroyed passport shortly after receiving the life-changing call confirming his selection to the national squad.
"I got my passport out to take a photo to send to the team manager and I just left it on my bedside table," Carter explained. "My partner went to the gym and left my dog home alone and it's gone down the hallway, jumped on the bed and just chewed up the passport and my teeth aligners."
Quick Recovery from Passport Crisis
The incident, which could have potentially derailed Carter's debut, showcases the unexpected challenges that can arise in professional sports careers. Unlike the recent smooth sailing of New Zealand's cricket team, Carter's journey to international representation hit this peculiar snag.
Demonstrating remarkable composure, Carter maintained his sense of humor about the situation. "It was a bit of a shambles yesterday. I was trying to get an emergency one but I think it's all sorted now. I thought it would happen to me, something like that, so no point getting stressed about it."
Championship Campaign Ahead
The All Blacks squad is scheduled to depart Friday for their crucial Rugby Championship matches in Argentina, with games planned in Cordoba on August 17 and Buenos Aires a week later. The tournament, which also includes Australia and South Africa, represents a significant opportunity for new players like Carter to make their mark on international rugby.
